Special Olympics school games hosted by SMCHS

Omar Torres stood poised and confident.

He swung his arms around in circles, warming them up and loosening his joints like the Major League Baseball pitchers he had seen on TV. A softball rolled toward his foot; he let it roll onto his toes and deftly kicked it upward to catch it as he does when he plays soccer. 

Omar, 13, casually tossed the softball in the air over and over as he chatted with his teammates. When he was given the signal, he galloped sideways to gain momentum before hurling the ball more than 30 feet into the field.

The TeWinkle Middle School student grinned, high-fived his teammates, and prepared for the second toss in the Special Olympics Softball Throw. Omar was one of more than 250 athletes from 13 schools around the county who traveled to Santa Margarita Catholic High School on Friday morning to compete in the Orange County Athletics School Games.  MORE

Ms. Kristi Jacobs is TeWinkle's Teacher of the Year. She will be honored along with the Newport Mesa Schools Foundation grant recipients on Thursday, February 4th.

Ms. Jacobs has been a member of the TeWinkle community since 2007 and serves as a Resource Specialist. Ms. Jacobs is currently completing a Masters of Science degree in Special Education from Cal State Fullerton. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development from Hope International University.

Kristi collaborates with her colleagues to help develop and implement a strong Response to Intervention plan for TeWinkle students. She believes in being a significant force that changes a child's potential and ignites the possibilities that a love of learning can bring. This year, Ms. Jacobs has integrated the iPod Touch to her curriculum as a web-based intervention.
